Jackson and Rye - Soho

Jackson and Rye is a cafe and bar situated on Wardour Street. Some say it's an American diner but I don't get that. I came with a group of friends to discuss bridesmaids' duties and thought this would be the ideal place for brunch and a good natter. 

The restaurant is quite cramped especially when it's busy, like to get to our table I had to suck in my belly and side walk around someone and I'm not the biggest person. Booking is recommended on the weekends as it did get busy, I could see faces of disappointment when they were told of the waiting time.

So about the food, the Jackson and Rye menu has a good selection of breakfast and brunch choices for sweet or savoury tastes. They offer pancakes, pastries, sandwiches and your usual egg breakfast choices. I chose the Farmer's, which came with eggs, bacon, sausage patty, fried potatoes and granary bread. My photo below doesn't look appealing; apart from the eggs my plate looked all one colour. 

I thought the food was average, it wasn't anything special and has put me off coming back. Maybe I ordered the wrong item,I don't know but it was nothing to shout about. Everything was cooked well, but for me the flavour wasn't there or the pizazz which would separate it from other places in London.

Flat Iron

You can't get a better steak in London for £10 than at Flat Iron. There is no booking policy so expect a long wait but they do take your number so you can wander around before being called. 

The pop-up turned restaurant is small and the menu is simple. Steak. I ordered mine medium-rare with roast aubergine on the side and it was delicious. The meat is certainly high quality and seasoned well, I was so impressed. For £10 its an absolute steal for steak lovers on a budget. I liked the presentation of the dish and the fact you are given a small meat cleaver to slice it into mouth sized pieces. 

The only thing I didn't like, although becoming more popular in London is the communal seating arrangements. The table we sat on had a fixed seat and I was in the middle, half hearing the conversation next to me and trying to chat to friends. Other than that the service was great and I liked the quirkiness of the restaurant. Highly recommended.

Lobos - London Bridge

My friend and I planned on visiting Brindisa but it was jam packed so walked around London Bridge and stumbled upon Lobos. We were seated at the front as the rear was all booked up. It was cosy and had a nice vibe. We ordered a selection of tapas: manchego wtih quince, seafood with chilli and garlic, padron peppers, potato salad and croquettes. The croquettes were delicious, bit of pork overload with the bacon, ham and chorizo filling but it was good. The cold potato salad was a brave choice as I would have expected to have seen patas bravas on the menu but the dish was creamy and had a strong kick of garlic. 

I really enjoyed my meal at Lobos, the service was great and staff were very attentive. Bit more on the pricier side, we paid £30 including glass of wine each.

Smack Lobster Roll

Smack Lobster Deli has been on my list of places to eat for ages, alongside its siblings Burger & Lobster and Beast. The Russian owned Goodman Restaurant Group have been hot on turning a simple concept into London's most popular eateries. Unlike Burger and Lobster, Smack Deli serves only lobster but in a roll, on its own or salad and is more of a fast food joint.

After reading reviews I expected there to be a long wait to queue for food or to get a table but we strolled straight in to the counter and ordered. There are 4 styles of lobster rolls or you can order half/whole lobster. We chose the Mexican and Seven Samurai. Both were very good, the jalapeƱos topped on the Mexican gave it a nice spicy kick and the Seven Samurai was delicious. It could have done with a bit more ginger as I didn't taste that, but the lobster was really fresh and in abundance. Keeping the lobster together was the brioche roll, it was light and toasted to perfection. 

We also ordered the lobster chowder and courgette fries on the side. The chowder was delicious and the star of the show, it had large chunks of lobster meat and was rich in flavour. The fries were good but too oily for me, I wouldn't be ordering them again.

Overall I really enjoyed my meal here, the staff were friendly and kept the place clean. Better choices of sides would have been good but a place like this rides on its reputation and affordable lobster rolls.

Roti King - London Euston

Roti King is tucked away behind Euston station and upon first glance looks like some shady 24 hour fast food joint, but looks can certainly be deceiving. As I walked down the stairs I could see every seat in the house occupied. The place isn't that big and can certainly get crowded. We waited for about 10 minutes outside and looked at the menu before being seated. 

For lunch I chose the lamb roti canai and cold tek tarik, which is Malaysian tea with condensed milk. Being Vietnamese I do love ice cold tea/coffee and this was so good. The perfect drink to wash down the curry. What stole the show was the roti, it was buttery, light, crispy and didn't make me feel bloated. Prices are reasonable for what you get, I would happily come here again and try something different as the dishes all looked great. 

The downside of Roti King was the service was so slow, we waited around 30 minutes for our roti canai. There were tables which ordered after us and were served food before we did. Also one of the staff behind the counter shattered a glass tumbler and it flew everywhere. There was glass on the floor and by my foot, not once did anyone come around to check the floor or pick any up. They only replaced the food on the table closest to the counter after being prompted by the customer.

Dinerama - Shoreditch

Dinerama is a street food market in Shoreditch which houses cuisines from all over the world. When I visited it had returned from the ashes after the fire breakout and was looking good as new. I arrived at 6.30pm (note that after 7pm there is a £3 door charge) and crowds were slowly forming around the stalls with hungry people.

There is a good selection of food stalls which feature here, the difficulty is finding where to eat. As I walked around the smells were amazing from barbecue to sweet doughnuts and wood fired pizza.

Cheeky Italian
My friend and I chose the beef poutine on fries from Cheeky Italian. The beef was slow cooked in a delicious gravy topped with cheese sauce and a pinch of rosemary tossed on top. It was so good, I could have eaten another box full.

Yum Bun
I quote from Yum Bun "Irresistibly soft steamed buns" which are jam packed with flavour and meat. We chose the slow roasted pork belly which came with cucumber, spring onion and hoisin sauce. The pork was juicy and succulent and had a sweet taste from the sauce, I shared it with my friend but could have really have eaten two of these to myself. 

The other was fried shrimp packed with green chilli sambal and shredded lettuce. The texture of the soft bun with the crispy battered shrimp paired like a match made in heaven. The sambal gave it a spicy kick, leaving a nice heated after taste. 

Big Bar
This was the pink grapefruit cocktail mixed with pomegranate, honey and mint. It was nothing special and overpriced for what is was.

The bigger the better - Homeslice

When you get the opportunity to land some estate in London, no matter how small but you have a unique selling point and passionate about food then there's a better chance of bringing in success and Homeslice embodies that.

Their unique selling point? 20 inch pizzas for £20. I'm not talking about the cardboard pizzas you'd get in the supermarket topped with plastic cheese. I'm talking about the real deal. Thin crust pizzas cooked in a wood burning oven with a seasonal selection of toppings. You can choose to do half and half as the chances are you're going to be sharing this beast of a pizza. My friend and I chose the pulled bbq brisket with pickles and goat shoulder with savoy cabbage, it was delicious.

Homeslice is located in Neal's Yard and there is a high chance of long queues as they have a no reservation policy. You can put your name and number down then when your table is free Homeslice will call you. The restaurant itself is small and you're practically rubbing elbows with the person next to you. Between the four of us we shared 2 pizzas and didn't even have space for our paper plates, even after strategically moving our drinks. 

It's a great place for casual dining and they even sell wine by the centimetre.

Banh Mi Bay

Being Vietnamese I'm usually quite picky when it comes to dining out at Oriental restaurants but I read a lot of positive reviews from Banh Mi Bay just off Chancery Lane and thought it looked too good to miss.

The restaurant looks really cute from the outside with its bright blue paint job, reminded me of a bakery. The inside is decorated with wooden furnishings and is smaller than I thought. The menu is written on a blackboard above the kitchen, which you can scan as you wait for a table.

I love Vietnamese food, the herbs and ingredients use are so aromatic and fresh. I chose the shredded caramel pork banh mi, which is a baguette filled with pickled carrot and mooli, cucumber, coriander and fresh chilli. You can then choose between wholemeal, white French baguettes or home-made Vietnamese baguettes, I obviously went for the latter. The banh mi was really filling and I didn't feel guilty eating it as it was stuffed well with fresh vegetables.

We also ordered banh xeo, which is a Vietnamese pancake made with rice flour filled with seafood and pork and some summer rolls. I forgot which one we actually ordered but it was delicious, I loved dipping it into the fish sauce. The banh xeo really hit the spot, it's one of my favourite Vietnamese dishes and Banh Mi Bay got it right. I really liked it.

Bibimbap Soho

It's been a long time since my last blog post, life has been crazy and then I went on holiday for three weeks which didn't help. I'm looking through my photos and boy do I have a big backlog to fill. 

So to start a couple weeks ago my friend and I stopped off at Bibimbap for dinner after a long day shopping and woo they do a great Korean bibimbap. Prior to visiting I read countless reviews on Bibimbap so naturally had high expectations for this eatery. The interior is modern and in your face, there’s no subtlety with the bright green paintwork and bold read writing on the walls. Stuck on the main wall are polaroid photos of many happy customers, which I thought was different.

The menu is simple and very affordable. We chose the pork and vegetable mandoo, which is fried pork and vegetable dumplings served with a chilli, garlic, seasame soy sauce. This was delicious and set the standard for the rest of the meal in which I chose the spicy pork bibimbap with a raw egg.

They say the best way to eat Bibimbap is to mix it as much as you can and this is certainly what I did with my chopsticks. The stone pot was burning hot, which made the egg cook quickly and combined everything together. You do need to keep mixing until you finish as the food is constantly cooking and you don't want the rice to harden. 

One of my irks and this doesn't only apply to Bibimbap but a lot of oriental restaurants in London is use the cheap wooden chopsticks. I hate these and I think food would taste a lot better if they used proper plastic or metal chopsticks. Other than that, the food and service was great, I'd definitely be happy to come back and try other dishes.
