Life's a beach

The reason behind why I chose this place over any other fish and chip shop in Bondi Beach was because I was drawn to the large sign overhanging in the front saying that they won the award for the NSW chip shop of the blah blah blah.

I didn't see why this place was so popular, the food wasn't that great. The chips were thick with nothing but air inside, I was wondering where the potato was and the fish was soggy. I was so disappointed with this place.

Hom's Cafe in Darwin

Prior to coming to Northern Territory I was told by friends that the barramundi in Darwin was an absolute must as its usually fresh and sourced locally. So I took their advice and grabbed my Lonely Planet book and a pen and sat in Hom's Cafe, which sits on the busy strip on Mitchell Street.

I always walk past this cafe and it tends to be filled with busy travellers or locals so that enough persuaded me. I ordered barramundi in focaccia bread with skinny fries.

The barramundi was garnished with cucumber, tomato, onion, lettuce and topped perfectly with tartare sauce and not to mention two large slabs of toasted focaccia bread. The portion was larger than I expected, not sure how much I paid for it, think it was around the $15 mark but it was tasty and worth every dollar. The fish was grilled and fell apart in my mouth and the skin on top was crispy, each bite I had I could hear a crunchy snap.

This is a lovely cafe for those who want good fresh food and its also a great place to sit outside and watch the world go by.

Strange But True

If you're travelling up the Stuart Highway towards Darwin then you will most likely pass through a tiny town called Daly Waters. We visited a quirky pub called Daly Waters Pub (how imaginative) and the bar is decorated with random donations from travellers or anyone who passer bys. And by donations I mean bras, sports jerseys, money, ID pictures and loads of random junk. At first I was like, what is all this mess but then it grows on you and you can tell that this place is loved by everyone and anyone who visits.

Bojangles Saloon and Restaurant

The thing that attracted me to Bojangles was the saloon style swinging doors and when you walked inside the interior was decorated with the most bizarre things. From crocodile skin to a Scaletrix track and not to mention the bar inhabitant, a snake called Gryffindor.

For me the restaurant lacked atmosphere, I felt that everyone in the bar knew each other and would whisper behind your back when you turned away. The food on the other hand was great! I ordered lamb shank with potato mash and gravy and it was a big wow. The smell just made my mouth salivate and I could see everyone eye up my plate. The lamb fell off the bone with a gentle pull and it was so tender and flavoursome. The mash was nice and creamy but the main focus was the lamb shanks and the sheer size of them. This dish was absolutely tasty!
